Ingredients

  • 1 block extra-firm tofu (14 to 16 ounces)
  • 1⁄4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon salt
  • 1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil, divided

Instructions

  • Remove tofu from the package and press between paper towels for 20 minutes. Cut into 1⁄2-inch thick triangles.
  • Pat the tofu dry once more with paper towels to remove any excess moisture on the surface.
  • Mix cornstarch and seasonings in a shallow dish. Dredge tofu pieces lightly in the cornstarch mixture.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add 2 tablespoons of oil and swirl to coat the pan.
  • Carefully add half the tofu triangles in a single layer. Cook undisturbed for 4 minutes.
  • Flip the tofu and cook another 3–4 minutes until crispy and golden.
  • Transfer the tofu to a paper towel-lined plate. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil to the pan and repeat with the remaining tofu.
  • Serve crispy tofu immediately while it is still hot and crispy. Enjoy as desired!

Notes

  • For best results, use extra-firm or super-firm tofu. Regular, firm tofu may not get as crispy.
  • Make sure to press the tofu before marinating to remove excess moisture. This helps the tofu get extra crispy when baking.
  • Cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes or smaller pieces to increase the crispiness.
  • Let the tofu marinate for at least 15–20 minutes to allow the flavors to soak in. But no longer than 30 minutes, so the tofu doesn't get mushy.
  • Use cornstarch for coating, not flour, for the crispiest texture.
  • Bake the tofu on a lightly greased baking sheet in a single layer, not touching, so all sides get crispy.
  • Flip the tofu halfway during baking to ensure even crisping on all sides.
  • For extra crunch, broil the baked tofu for 1-2 minutes at the end. Keep an eye on it so it doesn't burn.
  • Serve the crispy tofu immediately for maximum crispness. Leftovers can be reheated in the oven or air fryer.
  • Try using the crispy tofu in stir-fries, Buddha bowls, salads, or on its own as a snack!
