Have you been watching The Big Family Cooking Showdown on BBC Two? It’s a brand new cooking competition that sees 16 families battling it out win the Cooking Showdown title. The Big Family Cooking Showdown is hosted by Nadia Hussain (former Bake Off winner) and Zoe Ball and judged by renowned chefs Giorgio Locatelli and Rosemary Shrager. It makes fantastic watching, seeing the drama and antics of the families doing their very best cooking together as a team.
To accompany the TV series there is The Big Family Cooking Showdown book (BBC books, hardback £20) which includes the best recipes from the show as well as 10 original recipes from Rosemary Shrager. There’s a whole range of tasty recipes to try, including dishes like the Red Prawn Curry, Porchetta Wellington and Rosemary’s Luxury Fish Pie.
I’ve been attempting my own version of the #CookingShowdown at home when my sister and her three children visited recently. I have to admit I’m a bit of a control freak and like things done my way in the kitchen, so I cooked up a feast by myself. As my husband was out for the evening seeing old school friends, I was cooking for 6 very hungry children and two adults. A tough challenge indeed, as my children can be a bit fussy but thankfully my two nieces and nephew eat anything! For the main main I cooked the yummy looking Swedish Meatballs with Dill Mash. For dessert I baked Dotty Grandma’s Apple Crumble but decided against making the cardamom custard that accompanies it as the kids wanted ice cream instead.
I make meatballs all the time and relished the opportunity to try a new meatball recipe. The allspice sauce served with the meatballs was scrumptious, and smelt really good whilst cooking. The meatballs were all polished off quickly and seemed to be a huge hit. Needless to say everyone thoroughly enjoyed the apple crumble too, and the kids were asking for more. I think the meal was a great success.
