With an ever increasing demand on food supplies Stefan Gates seems to have come up with the answer, Insects. Yep, you heard me right. Stefan’s new book Insects: An Edible Field Guide takes you through the tricky world of eating insects.
Obviously, this not a book for the faint hearted and I’m not going to pretend I’m ready to delve into this new culinary world of entomophagy (eating insects). However, Stefan’s book makes interesting reading and will certainly provide food for thought in these times of rising food prices. Believe or not but two billion people around the world already eat insects. That’s a lot of people. So while we Brits may think it’s disgusting or just plain weird, many people are eating insects as part of their regular diet and not because they have to either!
Stefan is keen to point out that we probably have already eaten insects at some point. Food that it artificially pink has probably had a good dose of ‘cochineal’, ‘E120’ or ‘carmines’ otherwise know are cochineal bugs. So why bother with insects? Apparently they are highly nutritious, packed full of protein and micronutrients. Insects: An Edible Field Guide is bursting with information on over 70 edible insects from around the world. You’ll find information where to find them and how to eat them. You never know you might find yourself cooking up a Congolese Mopane Worm Curry, Sesame Cricket Nibbles or maybe Witchetty Grub Kebabs.
